Amara Ocean Resort
Amara Ocean, located down a bumpy road on the northern stretch of Ngapali beach, is the embodiment of a castaway experience in Burma. A collection of 24 thoughtfully created teak bungalows, nestled amongst the palms on the edge of the stunning beach.
Sandoway Resort
Sandoway Resort is a long-standing Yonder favourite. It occupies a fabulous location in the middle of Ngapali Beach, Myanmar, and delivers consistently time after time.
The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate
The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate is a charming hotel with a superb location in Old Bagan, Myanmar, situated next to the imposing Tharabar Gate, one of the main entrances to Old Bagan, and opposite the Ananda Temple, one of the most iconic monuments.
Bagan Lodge
Newly-built Bagan Lodge is probably the leading light of the Bagan hotel scene. One of the lovely things about the hotel is that the concept is for it to blend in with the surrounding countryside. The rooms all have canvas roofs and the buildings are painted in a muted brown.
The Road To Mandalay
What could be more evocative than boarding a river cruiser on Myanmar’s mighty Irrawaddy named The Road To Mandalay? And when you hear that it is a Belmond (formerly The Orient Express) river cruiser you'll know what perfection awaits.
The Strand Cruise
The Strand Cruise is the new kid on the block on Myanmar’s mighty Irrawaddy river. Launched in early 2016 with a single superbly appointed boat, the Myanmar Strand Cruise is unquestionably brilliant.
Aureum Palace Pyin Oo Lwin
The Aureum Palace is really the only hotel in Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar. As we’ve remarked elsewhere, all hotels within this Burmese-owned chain are idiosyncratic in style. But at least you know what you are going to get: generally reliable service, clean rooms and broadly decent food.
Red Canal
The Red Canal in Mandalay conjures visions of a waterway threading its crimson hue through this fabled city. In reality, the Red Canal is unremarkable. But the same cannot be said of the little hotel that borrows its name, which is extremely charming and friendly.
Rupar Mandalar
The hotel jewel in Mandalay’s dazzling crown, the Rupar Mandalar Hotel is by far and away the best in Mandalay, Myanmar. Not only is it conceptually the most carefully considered, but the detail with which it operates is unsurpassed in the city.
Mandalay Hill Resort
The Mandalay Hill Resort in Myanmar is big, brash and very reliable. Whilst we generally avoid referring to the defunct hotel star rating system, the Mandalay Hill Resort would sit very solidly on four-star ground.
The Sanctum
The Sanctum Inle Resort is a Yonder hot pick. This is a hotel that offers an experience like no other on Inle Lake, Myanmar. Designed to inspire contemplation through conceptual overtones of a European monastery with cloisters, Spanish arches and beamed ceilings.
Novotel Inle Lake
This place is different to the rest at Inle Lake. Why? Because it’s massive and made of concrete. All the ingredients of a classic Novotel. And that makes it a breath of fresh air for those tiring of the vernacular architecture of thatched roofs and ubiquitous teak.
Aureum Palace Inle
You’ll arrive at the Aureum Palace Inle to water features, statues, huge columns and a heavily teak-lined open reception. From here, the hotel cascades down towards the lake shore, occupying as it does a lovely lake-front setting with a huge pool overlooking the water.
Inle Princess Resort
Inle Princess welcomes guests back time and time again. Renowned for its excellent staff, quality food and its beautiful location, it is one of the best on Inle Lake. Its location, with its own private canal entrance, is simply magical. It’s an enclave of tranquillity.
Royal Kalaw Hills Resort
Surreal as it may sound, the hill country of Myanmar is just the place to enjoy a stay in a charming English guest house, complete with mock Tudor details. You can almost imagine Hyacinth Bucket twitching the curtains here.
Amara Hill Resort
Set high in the cool hills above the town of Kalaw, the Amara Hill Resort is a charming hotel and the number one overnight spot in town. Spacious rooms liberally endowed with Burmese teak and a huge four-poster bed along with a decent modern ensuite.
The Strand
The Strand hotel is Grand Dame of Yangon, Burma. We have a real soft spot for her. And yet again, she was the brainchild of our faithful old chums the entrepreneurial Sarkies brothers (remember them from Singapore and Penang?).
The Governor’s Residence
Without doubt, the hotel to experience in Rangoon. This is an early 20th Century colonial mansion, in fact the former home of the governor of the southern states of Myanmar, which has been restored to create a 49-bedroom hotel of unparalleled luxury.
