Phuket, the most famous of all of the Thai islands, has been enjoying a sun-filled renaissance and we at Yonder have been basking in its renewed glory. We’ve gone out exploring, rediscovering little corners of this picture-perfect paradise – and we are putting it back on our secret map.
Actually, we have done more than just explore Phuket, we’ve ventured out on private speed boats to neighbouring islands on the hunt for the most perfect tropical coves with sensational hotels tucked away out of sight and we’ve come up with delicacies more moorish than coconut sticky rice.
Where it was once the leader of the pack in the 1980s and 90s, Phuket had fallen out of favour due to the boom in construction and the ensuing mass commercialisation. And this still blights certain parts of the island. But we’ve narrowed down a few far-flung corners that still echo those heady old days of family-run restaurants on the beach serving up the most delicious seafood, charming street vendors greeting people with a smile and quaint villages where locals and tourists mingle without the clamour and hassle that is rife in other parts of Thailand.
