But here at Yonder, we don’t see Japanese tradition and modernity as contrasts but as layers of the same story, as this two week itinerary neatly encapsulates. Over 14 days, you’ll move down the spine of Honshu, Japan’s biggest island, calling at neon-lit cityscapes, forested temple grounds, mountain villages, and volcanic landscapes. First-class bullet trains, private guides, and stays in places of quiet refinement ensure a journey that is as effortless as it is immersive. From the energy of Tokyo to the measured rituals of Kyoto, from the legacy of Hiroshima to the shifting light over Mount Fuji, this itinerary is designed for those who travel with curiosity, seeking encounters that linger long after departure.
At each port of call you’ll be accompanied by your private driver/guide while staying at our curated collection of utterly unique boutique hotels. There are many ways of seeing Vietnam, this is the Yonder way.

DAYS 1-3 | Tokyo
Guided tours of Imperial Gardens, Edo-period temples, train ride to Kamakura
Arriving in Tokyo, you are met at the airport and guided to a waiting car for a seamless transfer to your hotel. After a long journey, the rest of the day is yours—perhaps a slow walk through the Imperial Gardens or a quiet drink with a view over the city’s endless skyline. Your second morning begins with a private meeting with a guide, an opportunity to refine plans and discuss any details before setting out into the city’s layered history. One of Tokyo’s defining qualities is its ability to hold extremes within a single street—Edo-period temples beside avant-garde galleries, a fifth-generation soba shop steps away from a Michelin-starred counter seat. Your guide leads you through this interplay, shaping the day to your pace. A day at leisure follows. A chance to step away from the city and take the train south to Kamakura, where the Great Buddha has watched over the hills for centuries. Here, temples are tucked into quiet forests, and the scent of the ocean drifts through narrow lanes lined with craft stores and old teahouses.

DAYS 4-6 | Tsumago
Two days exploring countryside of Tsumago
Leaving Tokyo, the train winds through the countryside toward Tsumago, one of the preserved postal towns of the Nakasendo Trail. Once a crucial route for samurai and traders, today it is a place of deep calm—wooden inns, paper lanterns swaying in the breeze, the sound of footsteps on old stone paths. In the afternoon, a walk along a section of the Nakasendo Trail reveals temples, mountain views, and a quiet rhythm of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
DAYS 7-8 | Hiroshima & Miyajima
Walking tour of Peace Memorial Park, ferry ride to Miyajima and vermillion torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine
A journey by train southward brings you to Hiroshima, a city that has rebuilt itself with quiet dignity. The Peace Memorial Park is a space of reflection, where the weight of history is felt in the silence of the Atomic Bomb Dome and the thousands of folded paper cranes left as offerings of remembrance. A short ferry ride takes you to Miyajima, where the vermillion torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine appears to float on the tide. As the crowds thin in the evening, the island takes on a different atmosphere—deer wander temple grounds, lanterns flicker along the shoreline, and the sea laps against the old wooden piers.

DAYS 9-11 | Kyoto & Nara
Tour of Kyoto Women’s Association, street markets, and scenic train ride to Nara
The shinkansen delivers you to Kyoto, a city that doesn’t reveal itself all at once. Its beauty is in the details—a perfectly raked temple garden, the worn wooden steps of a tea house, the fleeting presence of a geiko disappearing into the alleys of Gion at dusk. Your time here is structured yet unhurried. A morning spent at the Kyoto Women’s Association, where the intricate folds of a kimono and the measured movements of a tea ceremony are quietly explained. Afternoons at leisure—perhaps an exploration of the food markets, a visit to the shimmering Golden Pavilion, or the hushed corridors of Nijo Castle. A short train ride brings you to Nara, where sacred deer wander freely among temples that predate Kyoto itself. The colossal wooden Buddha at Todai-ji is a marvel of scale and craftsmanship, while hidden temple trails offer a quieter, more personal experience of the city’s spiritual past.

DAYS 12-13 | Hakone & Mount Fuji
Explore Hakone National Park and sculpture museum
Heading back west, Hakone is where the landscape takes precedence. Here, steam rises from volcanic springs, lakes reflect the shifting sky, and if the conditions align, Mount Fuji emerges—a presence rather than a landmark. With a Hakone Free Pass in hand, you can navigate the national park at your own pace—boarding a cable car that glides over sulfur vents, taking a boat across Ashi-no-ko, or visiting the renowned open-air sculpture museum, where modern art sits quietly within the landscape.

DAYS 14 | Tokyo
Revisit a favorite district or final walk through the gardens of the Imperial Palace.
A final morning in Hakone before returning to Tokyo by train for a last evening in the capital. This is a chance to revisit a favorite district or seek out a new one—a hidden whisky bar in Ginza, a late-night ramen counter, or one final walk through the gardens of the Imperial Palace. The next morning, a private transfer takes you to the airport for your onward journey.
