The Fortress, on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, is a firm favourite for returning visitors year after year. The spectacular oceanfront location, the long sandy beach off to the west and the reliable service have helped it maintain its enduring appeal.
As you walk through the vast gated wooden entrance you’ll find an imposing colonial style building replete with white columns, open spaces and clay roof tiles. You’ll feel awed by the scale and when you look through the open reception over the infinity pool and across the ocean into the distance you’ll be taken aback by its sheer beauty.
The Fortress rooms are formulaic in nature, as you would expect from a hotel of this size, but they are well appointed and impeccably designed with dark wood floors contrasting with white-washed walls and ceilings and then the vibrant blues of the sky and sea beyond. Our favourite places to sleep are the Ocean Rooms on the first floor with the magnificent private balconies and uninterrupted views out across the cobalt ocean. Along with these, the Beach Rooms on the ground floor with their direct access out on to the manicured gardens, pool and beach and a treat. Each sublime in its own right with sumptuous marble lined bathrooms.
The facilities and amenities at the Fortress will leave you wanting for nothing. The huge sea front pool, with separate children’s pool, the superb restaurants (make sure you check out Red Snapper!) and the exquisite gym and spa make this one of the best luxury resort hotels in Sri Lanka.
