We’ve got more culture than we know what to do with! Seriously, at Yonder we CARE about culture. As the Victorian poet Matthew Arnold said, culture is acquainting ourselves with the best that has been known and said in the world, and thus with the history of the human spirit.
Couldn’t have said it better ourselves. With Yonder you’re certainly not short of wonders to get acquainted with when it comes to cultural holidays and art holidays. For example, there’s Burma’s stunning Shwedagon pagoda in Yangon, a golden dome topped with a 76-carat diamond and 2,317 rubies and rising 110 meters into the air. It has been standing, on a relic of Buddha’s hair, for over 2,500 years.
Or Sri Lanka’s amazing Cultural Triangle which contains no fewer than seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, like Anuradhapura, location of one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, dating from the 4th century BC, and Sigiriya, an ancient palace and fortress complex that soars 200 metres above the surrounding jungle. It’s just breathtaking.
The Far East has a wealth of colonial hotspots where you can relive the days of the Raj. There’s Edwin Lutyens’ astonishing architectural vision in India’s New Delhi, created at the height of Empire. There’s George Town in Malaysia’s Penang, one of the first British settlements in South-East Asia and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Raj-era mansions are today dwarfed by towering skyscrapers. And in Sri Lanka’s Galle Fortress, you’ll find a living time capsule, a melting pot of colonial grandeur and bohemian chic.
Oh and we cannot forget the astonish temples of Bagan in Myanmar, a 46 sq km archaeological zone literally covered with no fewer than 2,200 stupas and temples. It’s jaw-dropping. Whether it’s a cultural holiday, an art holiday or a history-rich holiday you’re looking for, Yonder has it covered.
