PRICE: Punchy but doesn’t blow the budget
Someone who knew a thing or two about luxury hotels once said location, location, location was the key to success. If this is a truism, Uga Bay has nailed it. Located in the centre of the stunning Pasikuda beach, this a sun lovers nirvana.

Despite its remote location on the east coast, Uga Bay is a luxury hotel in Sri Lanka that has got it right. The huge beach front pool drops away into the silky smooth ocean beyond and the restaurant serves up the most delicious local seafood accompanied by locally grown organic vegetable and herbs. And in the early evening sitting on bean bags amongst the glowing lanterns at the ocean’s edge is a gloriously intoxicating experience.
There are four room categories and all as chic as you would expect. Polished concrete is liberally used throughout and the dense cotton weave of the linen is enough to make you want to hunker down all day long.
The Bay Suite and Beach Villa have their own private pools. But for us, the Ocean Front Studios are divine. there is nothing more exhilarating than opening the French doors onto the fine white sand.
The fusion of Mediterranean and tropical architecture might not be to everyone’s taste and for us it is a bit on on the garish side. But let’s not knock a good thing. Overall the hotel is superb and if Pasikuda is the ace of beaches in Sri Lanka’s deck of cards, then Uga Bay is the king. And well worth the effort to get there.

Pasikuda bay stretches out in both directions. Go either way to discover unassuming beach-side restaurants which dish up mouthwatering seafood.
