The Lodhi
PRICE: Worth maxing out for
From the moment your car rolls up at The Lodhi in Delhi, you know you’ve arrived somewhere very special. Its super hip, refined and elegant in a very contemporary way. No wonder, as it’s a former Aman urban hotel.
The hotel is angular, with imposing sandstone blocks creating the structure, which give it tremendous warmth and stature. The textured screens which hang from the façade provide privacy to the ginormous bedrooms that lie within. The places oozes luxury.
Arriving, you’ll walk through huge sliding glass doors, experience magnificent ceiling heights and settle into the lobby’s perfect sumptuous sofas. You’ll find interesting colourful contemporary art – in fact there is even a gallery, as well as a library and cigar room, a spectacular sunken pool set amongst columned walkways, a vast gym and health club.
The restaurants are truly superb and you’ll find sophisticated Delhiites dropping by for a coffee at OTW (On The Waterfront) in the afternoons. As for the restaurants… we’ve eaten fabulous Indian curries and breads straight from the tandoor and the Italian has to be amongst the best in Delhi.
And then there are the rooms… Wow! We can confidently say the best in Delhi and by some margin. The vast rooms start at a mere 550sq ft. Muted tones run throughout with silken scatter cushions adorning the fine linen beds, pale grey washes on the walls and exquisite bespoke furniture in the dressing room.
The bathrooms are in a league of their own with vast rain showers, enormous baths, many of which have views out over through picture windows, and double basins and vanity units. Saving the best till last, the Lodhi Rooms and above have oversized plunge pools on the full-span balconies, naturally with sumptuous accompanying day beds and a separate al fresco dining area.
