PRICE: Punchy but doesn’t blow the budget
Mahoora Safari Camp has a stunning location on the edge of a watering hole in Sri Lanka’s Uda Walawe national park and beside a huge granite rock. You’ll almost certainly hear elephants from the camp and on the odd occasion you’ll see them at the water’s edge.
The naturalists or wildlife guides are extremely passionate and well-educated about their subjects. During the 40-minute drive from the camp to the park gate, they will keep you enthralled with their endless knowledge about the park, its ecosystem and the impact of various policy changes.
The camp staff are extremely attentive and keen to please. The food, understanding that it is in the middle of nowhere, is excellent. In fact, breakfast high up on the rock overlooking the park, sitting on the floor with low tables, has to rank as one of the best breakfast experiences in Sri Lanka.
And their coconut roti with chilli paste is to die for. We’ve eaten a lot of coconut roti – traditional Sri Lankan bread – and this one really is vying for the top spot.
Accommodation can be described as rustic, at best. You are not here for the silken trappings of elsewhere. The Elite tents might be elite in concept but not in reality . However for a couple of nights they are more than adequate.
Each tent has its own indoor bathroom with toilet and shower but both have a hint of Carry On Camping comedy value about them. The beds, bedding and lighting may leave you a little underwhelmed. But that’s really not the point. The overall experience of a stay at Uda Walawe is so fabulous, we’re sure you will leave with huge smiles on your faces.
