Periyar National Park is 118 square miles of lush evergreen forests, rolling hills, rare wildlife and quite simply some of the most beautiful landscapes imaginable. The park is a Unesco-listed protected area and one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world.
Famous as a tiger reserve, it’s also a great place to spot elephants frolicking in the lakes and rivers, hear the songs of migrant and endemic birds, and explore the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations that surround the park.
Its tropical forests, stands of eucalyptus and misty mountains support an incredible 171 species of grass and 140 species of orchids along with many other plants, many medicinal in nature and unique to this area.
A peaceful half or full day journey through Periyar on a relaxing bamboo raft is a unique way to experience a lot of what the park had to offer, as well as slow down and listen to the natural lullaby of birdsong and water splashing against the raft.
The area is also home to a number of tribal communities, including the native Mannan tribe, and the park does offer programmes for travellers to visit and get an insight into these incredible communities, known for living at one with nature.
A visit to a spice garden, bursting with delicious scents and flavours, is a delightful way to relax, understand more about the nature of the area and even improve your culinary skills!
