Killa Bhawan
PRICE: Painless
There are no other hotels in Rajasthan quite like the Killa Bhawan. It is the place to stay due to its unique location within the ancient fortress of Jaisalmer. A delightful boutique guest house full of character and vernacular charm, it is simple, unpretentious and utterly charming.
The Killa Bhawan has just eight rooms, two of which are ensuite. The rooms are on the small side but given its unique location we can be more than forgiving. Within, hues of crimson, orange and lime spill through the soft furnishings, and looking out, the best views in town, out towards the Thar Desert, await as the hotel straddles a section of the ramparts between three of the fort’s 99 bastions.
On its wonderful roof terrace you could be forgiven for thinking you’d slipped into a scene from One Thousand and One Nights, thanks to its brightly coloured floor cushions which sit beneath dazzling starlit skies above the sandstone palaces and ornate Jain temples.
The Killa Bhawan is co-run by a Swiss-Italian and a Jaisalmeri, meaning that the food is a spectacular fusion. The regional Indian food is divine and the Italian-inspired menu is pretty good too.
Yonder Insight
Our favourite room is the honeymoon suite; one of the two ensuite rooms, with a private balcony overlooking the city.
On your doorstep
The magical and ethereal Jaisalmer Fort is at your toes. The citadel is mercifully traffic free so you’ll be able to meander along the maze of narrow streets without looking over your shoulder
