Vietnam is a country that whispers its secrets rather than shouting them. This is not a country for the fly & flop tourist – which is precisely why we love it so much. In our experience, the visitors who enjoy Vietnam the most are those who appreciate the slow burn of discovery; travellers who are prepared to work for their gratification, rather than have it all handed to them on a plate.
Whereas other countries in Asia (and beyond) have given over big parts of their public life to serve the tourism monster, in Vietnam you can’t avoid the impression that you’re there as a guest in their country: a welcome guest no doubt, but always on their terms.
This is a fiercely independent nation, one that resisted and expelled three of the world’s biggest powers in back-to-back succession. Whatever your politics, you can’t help but respect this indefatigable spirit—and neither can you help but be reminded of it, with portraits of Uncle Ho in every shop and on every street corner.
So, what can you expect from Yonder’s Vietnam? Expect leisurely mornings on a balcony in Old Hanoi, the streets freshly washed by rain, the smell of fresh baguettes baking and strong black coffee brewing; this last vestige of French Indochina that endures into the 21st century.
Expect absolute solitude aboard a traditional, hand-built junk as you sail across the mirror waters of Ha Long Bay; disembark to kayak between the limestone karsts and uncover secret coves and floating fishing villages.
Expect to be truly mesmerised – and trust us, there is no other word for it – by Hoi An; one of the few towns to escape the brutality of the 20th century and left standing as a living museum to everything that was lost. Ochre walled storefronts 500 years old, paper lanterns floating lazily on the river, steaming bowls of cao lau noodles, and the smells and sounds of the wet market firing up at dawn, just like it has for centuries.
If you’ve got the appetite for more, you can expect the hustle of what was once Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City, one of Asia’s fastest growing megalopolises but with a classic Vietnamese twist: low plastic stools on street corners serving hot bowls of the famed phở soup, hectic markets and a hard but nonetheless important visit to the War Remnants Museum.
And beyond the big names, there are boat trips to be had on the Mekong Delta, beaches on which to unwind on the southern coast, mountains to hike in the far north. But this is not a country to be rushed: some of the best moments in Vietnam are those spent sitting at a street stall, sipping an outrageously sweet cà phê and just watching the organised chaos of everyday life unfold before your eyes.
And on top of all of this is the Yonder difference: In a country that is unfortunately dominated by mega hotels and resorts, our Vietnam specialists have curated a selection of the very best boutique hotels to ensure your journey of discovery is conducted from the height of comfort. You’ll be accompanied every step of the way with your own private driver-guide, giving you unique insight into the local way of life and helping open doors that you didn’t even know existed.
This is Yonder’s Vietnam and we can’t wait to share it with you.
