47 Jobner Bagh
PRICE: Affordable
Rajasthan is best known for its many palaces that have been transformed into luxury hotels but there are a number of secret historical haveli dwellings like 47 Jobner Bagh that are utterly charming. This delightful residence is full of architectural detail and exquisite hand-made artefacts dotted around the courtyard, while inside there are many niches to be found in the rooms and antechambers. The rooms are beautifully furnished and comfortable and the owner’s attention to detail even in the bathrooms, cannot be faulted.
The experience of staying in such pretty accommodation is more akin to being a guest in a private home (since there is only a limited number of rooms), giving an insight into how the extended families of the ruling Rajputs and court dignitaries may have lived. The owner and her family prepare the lovely meals and run the gift shop, which reflects the arts and crafts for which Rajasthan is fabled.
The rooftop terrace offers a glorious vista over the nearby Pink City. While the accommodation is tucked away on a little side street, within a few minutes walk you could be soaking up the amazing atmosphere and buzz of activity inside the old city, which is surrounded by walls, with entry gates at each of the compass points.
This charming residence is a welcome haven of tranquility. After a walking trip around the busy streets inside the city walls, where artisans still ply their trades and flower markets offer a dazzling selection of fragrant blooms, it is lovely to know that the restful experience of the haveli is awaiting you.
